I the Amazon
by griffinlady
The scent of the battle was heavy on his breath
When he threw the first blow across my face
I dodged it
Ducking below him,
Then defiantly I watched
As the sickening face of smooth reproach
Covered him again in one thick grin
I knew what he wanted,
And I took him on his offer
Madness as the flight of a moth
Betrayed nothing in foresight.
He took the last of his breath that day
The blade fell over his long pale neck
And I watched in silent disgust and triumph
He was slain, and never once
Did his head touch the ground
Though his blood seemed to thicken in heavy pools
No longer so deep to suspend my gaze.
On that day he fell
The hollow man my former
Into a chasm never heard
The silence of a closed box was his alone
The torment lay in ruins
And I returned
From the fighting hall of gray stone
And tall wooden arches
Back to my life in the other world
In the quick flight of sparrows.
